    Have you ever panicked because you couldn't remember the math homework that you should collect today? It is incredibly easy to feel like our constant screen time is slowly rotting our brains. For generations, we have been told that the "next big thing" will ruin the minds of the youth. Even the ancient philosopher Socrates famously warned that the invention of writing would implant forgetfulness in our souls, and filmmaker Steven Spielberg once voiced concerns that cell phones interrupt our natural ability to daydream.


    Today, the popular narrative insists that smartphones and artificial intelligence are destroying our attention spans, memory, and executive functioning. But before you throw your device out the window, you should know that a critical look at behavioral research reveals a massive plot twist: there is actually no clear evidence that digital technology is causing detrimental, lasting harm to our cognitive abilities. Instead of ruining our minds, technology might just be changing the predominant ways we think.


    A lot of the studies claiming technology harms our brains are only looking at temporary, fleeting effects. For instance, if you know you can easily look up a fact on a computer later, you are naturally more likely to remember where to find it rather than the actual fact itself. But this definitely does not mean your long-term memory is fundamentally broken. Choosing to rely on an external tool when it is right in front of you is not the same as losing your internal ability to remember things when you actually need to.


    When researchers see poor performance on memory or attention tests in the lab, it often boils down to a simple lack of motivation. Well, it is indeed a fact that our smart devices are incredibly engaging, proactive, and perfectly tailored to our personal goals, whether that means socializing, tracking fitness, or simply escaping reality for a bit. When someone is asked to do a taxing, inconsequential cognitive test in a lab setting, that task is going to feel incredibly boring compared to whatever is waiting on their phone. A dip in performance might not mean a person's brain is failing; technology might just be undermining their motivation to focus on a dry task assigned by an experimenter.


    Instead of seeing technology as an enemy draining our brainpower, scientists suggest viewing it as a helpful, complementary partner to our internal processes. In our daily lives, we constantly offload information to external tools and then reload it back into our minds later. By letting technology handle tasks that are tough for our brains to do alone, like heavy computations, complex data visualization, or rote memorization, we are actually freeing ourselves up to think differently.


    As we rely more on technology for this computationally demanding work, we are building highly valuable new skills. We are getting much better at navigating the iterative back-and-forth flow between our own internal thoughts and our digital tools, which is a skill that appears highly rewarded in the job market. Furthermore, when we use apps relying on machine learning for personalized recommendations, use GPS for driving navigation, or use Google to search for facts, we expand our access to information without having to memorize it all. This actually frees up our precious internal mental capacity for things like creative idea generation, learning new information, or intentionally letting our minds wander. We now enjoy the incredible flexibility to choose what we actually want to store in our own heads and what we are happy to leave to a smart device.


    While your phone might not be rotting your brain, it does introduce a brand-new challenge called cognitive laziness. Digital platforms are designed to feed us an endless, algorithmically customized stream of rewarding content meant for passive consumption. Because everything is so readily available at our fingertips, we have to exercise a lot more self-control.


    Researchers are particularly concerned about younger generations whose self-control capacities are still developing, as they risk becoming overly needy for this constant, effortless stimulation. If we get too used to that, activities that lack a constant stream of custom-made rewards and require active mental effort, like reading a novel and having to internally construct its fictional world, might start to feel much more cognitively challenging and less engaging than they used to. Moving forward, we will need greater self-insight to know exactly which tasks we want to offload for efficiency, and which ones we should perform ourselves to train our minds and retain information intrinsic to our learning goals.


    The scientific jury is still out on the absolute long-term impacts of our digital lives. However, recognizing that technology changes how we think, rather than simply degrading our minds, gives us a much clearer and more realistic path forward. In the future, our educational systems and testing methods might need to adapt by teaching students how to efficiently manage the flow of information between their internal processes and external tools. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that future generations know how to use digital technology as a tool they control, rather than a tool that controls them.
